In 1977 I squatted a house in the centre of Amsterdam with ten other people. We started a punk fanzine inspired by the British fanzine Sniffing Glue. To get a response we began to write and spray on the walls. At the end of 1977 there was a protest manifestation at the opening of the new metro that was running beside our squatted house. There I saw the first stencil sprayed, a protest text: “Metro = Geldriool” [metro = sewer], in fat, stencil-bold font. ‘Spraying freehand was frustrating most of the time, because I couldn’t get the effect I wanted. So, a few months later I cut my first stencils: one of Johnny Rotten and one of Bob Marley. Our fanzine was a photocopy magazine, the same time I blew up the images with Xerox to cut them out and spray around. In 1978 we started a shop called Gallery ANUS to sell our magazines and that of others. - "Street Knowledge" (pp. 140-141) by King Adz
I was born in Zimbabwe, Africa in 1981 and grew up in Las Cruces, NM. I graduated with a degree in Acting, and after college, worked as an actor and musician for the Santa Fe Shakespeare Festival, the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, and the California Shakespeare Theater. Throughout this, I was always doing artwork, and have since moved into doing artwork, design, and fabrication full-time.
Hugo Kaagman is the Dutch pioneer of street art. His work is influenced by a striking mix of politics, reggae, Moorish architecture and Delftware.

Stencil Class is Back at 1AM!!
Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to be a stencil artist? Do you like sharp things and spray paint? Feel the need to reject society’s conventions and make art that everyone can appreciate? Stenciling is used by several activist groups and governments; it’s an inexpensive tool that can have a huge visual impact on the community. Take a class in stencil making with a brief yet insightful history of stenciling with local stencil artist Jeremy Novy. Jeremy is known for his koi fish stencils found swimming throughout the city of San Francisco. Learn the meaning behind the Koi Fish stencil and how to design, cut and spray your own stencil. The class includes all supplies needed and a package of stencil making material.
