Chic' n' Stencil : 5 Nov in Paris

Far from the 80's, stencil art is now various. Chic that is so late 2000's distinguishes the artists featured in this exhibition. Elegant and glamorous like Zalez and Tian, delicacy in the Japan world of Stew, and the mystery of the Betty Baron's wheatpastings combine aesthetics with architectural lines of the Polish duo Monstfur and with the gentle poetry of based Vancouver Indigo.

C215 and Logan Hicks: 6 Nov

Show & Tell Gallery is proud to welcome world-renowned international stencil artists C215 (Paris) & Logan Hicks (NYC) to their first exhibition in Canada. The show titled “Parallel Universe” is a unique look at stencil art, a subculture of graffiti that can be traced back over 30 years. Through their medium of choice both artists aim to capture the essence of city life. Logan creates highly detailed renditions of cityscapes, focusing on architecture, alleyways, and scenes that might not be easily recognized as beautiful. C215 on the other hand aims to capture human emotions and feelings through the subjects he chooses to paint, with his focus mainly on homeless, anonymous, and people who are generally rejected by society. The juxtaposition of both artists style is really something special, while they are close friends and work in a common medium their artistic styles vary significantly. “Parallel Universe” marks the first joint show between the pair and will feature several collaborative works as well as pieces that are inspired by one another.

Robot Revolutionary Front : Stencils in New Astro Boy movie

Just caught the new Astro Boy movie, and was surprised to see stencils weigh prominently in many of the scenes when Astro is on the planet. The bumbling Robot Revolutionary Front managed to cut out a stencil and paint their robot bodies. Sparx, the "brains" of the RRF, seems to have some cans of Krylon on his tool belt. Astro and a group of kids then "tagged" the giant robot ZOG with stencils of arrows and triagle fangs. As the RRF prepares to sneak into the Robot Battle arena, they slapstick in an alleyway that has RRF stencils on the wall behind them. Yet another RRF stencil appears to be tagged on a billboard at the entrance to the arena.

Mud Stencils Create Environmentally-Conscious Graffiti

Just in time for the global 350 Protests, Inhabitat.com features Jesse Graves' mud stencils. Using mud is a great idea. Not illegal (can be washed off) and fun (who doesn't like playing in the mud?).

Inhabitat's post is mostly just rehashing what's on Jesse's site, but using better media is always something to think about. Especially when our spray cans aren't healthy at all!

Stencils at Seattle City Hostel

Jonathan Wakuda Fischer dropped off some new art (Archive update coming soon!) and a note about the Seattle City Hostel art project:

I don't know if Soule pointed you to the Seattle City Hostel Project, but both she and I stenciled our rooms we got to paint in August. There's a pretty dope website that can give you a virtual tour. Hers is #218, Mine is #206. [I noticed a few other rooms with stencils too. - R.]
